Common Types of Racing Karts
|
Sprint Karts  Sprint karts are usually raced on paved sprint road courses. These types of tracks consist of left turns, right turns, hairpins, sweeps, chicanes, etc. Both two-cycle and four-cycle engines are utilized. In a sprint race, the racers run a set number of laps. Thompson kart track is a sprint course.

Offset or Oval Karts
Oval karts are raced on oval tracks. These races are sprint style (limited to a predetermined numbers of laps). These tracks can be either dirt or paved asphalt. The majority of these karts are run with a four-cycle engine.

Enduro or Lay-down karts
 Enduro karts, also called road race karts, are raced on long road courses and speedways. These races are longer, timed events. They are referred to as "lay-down karts", because in order to reduce wind resistance, the driver is reclined that he or she is practically lying down.

Shifter karts
 Shifter karts are usually raced on road courses and larger sprint tracks. These karts have a gearbox and the driver shifts between gears.

Cage Karts or "Champ" karts
 Cage karts are primarily offset, heavier karts with a cage. These are raced on ovals on either dirt or paved asphalt surfaces, and are used with 4-cycle engines.
